Review: Josie Maran Argan Exfoliating Cleansing Powder

I'd like to cover this one, I've had it for a good while now. To be perfectly honest, I prefer daily chemical exfoliation over physical exfoliation - but I do have those times (once a month or so) that will gently use a scrub. That aside, this product has a lot of claims, a lot of hype and a lot of glowing reviews on Sephora's website. Lets take a look.

As always, here is a link to the product and a brief run-down of its claims:

Price: C$49.00

Size: 2 oz

Claims: Gentle enough for every day use. Contains "natural antibacterial and antioxidant powerhouses" - tea tree, ginkgo biloba, licorice root, and green tea to target blemishes and blackheads. Finely crushed argan shells exfoliate dead skin cells. Aspen bark extract calms/conditions skin and clarifies/refines pores. Papain (from the papaya fruit) a natural enzyme dissolves surface dead skin cells. Rice powder reduces the appearance of blemishes and age spots. Evens, conditions, brightens, softens and renews skin. Powder formula stays fresh until activated with water. Multi-purpose use: face mask, targeted spot treatment, lip scrub, or exfoliator.

Free of:

parabens, sulfates, phthalates.

How to use it?

Use a quarter sized amount (mix with water or an oil cleanser of choice), rub hands together to make a paste, massage into skin and rinse.

Pros?

- Does smooth and soften skin.

- Can easily turn your cleansers or oils into an exfoliant.

- Nice mild citrus scent.

Cons?

- Quite abrasive (not as harsh as some scrubs I have tried, but I would not characterize this as "gentle for every day use"). The jagged pieces of argan shells, although small, tear and scratch at the skin.

- Papain is likely ineffective in this type of product (from what I've read)

- Dispensing this powdery product in your hand and adding water creates a mess, almost too much of a hassle.

- High price tag (considering the concept of this product is an old one)

- The rubber stopper holding the product in the container broke after a few uses.

- I can't speak of the age-spot reducing claims, but I did not see any pore refining either.

Overall verdict?

I much prefer daily chemical exfoliation, but I do use this once in a while if I feel my skin needs a good scrub. I will most likely buy a cheaper exfoliant in the future. That being said, if you prefer a fancy manual exfoliator and scrubs are your thing go for it. Just be gentle and don't over do it - watch for signs of over-exfoliation.

Hope this helps! Remember to always wash your face before you go to bed! xo
