Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer Review

Hey guys! This isn't a new product, but it is definitely one I have not heard a lot of others talk about. I have seen this primer in hauls, but thats the last of it. Sooooo I figured I would pop up a review on it. I am posting this is because the original reason why I bought this primer and what I currently use it for are entirely different. Maybe I can help clarify for others what worked and what didn't. xo

As always, here are the product details and claims first:

Price: C$32.00

Size: .33 oz

Claims: Ultra-hydrating, reduces the look of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and dark circles. Brightens under eye and preps for makeup application to prevent concealer from settling into fine lines. Stocked full of anti-aging ingredients.

My Quick Thoughts:

* Silky texture that easily blends into skin

* Fragrance free

* Temporary illuminates the undereye with a slight shimmer from added mica, BUT this is not noticeable when foundation/concealer is applied over top

* Did not reduce fine lines, wrinkles, or puffiness

* Did not reduce my dark circles or colour correct them

* Concealar and foundation still settles into fine lines

* Hydrating

* Contains some good ingredients

* Pricey

A Few Key Ingredients:

* Caprylic Triglyceride - derived from coconut oil and glyceride. Repairs skin surface and prevents moisture loss.

* Butyrospermum Parkii - Shea Butter

* Lecithin - Phospholipid found in egg yolks and cell membranes. A great ingredient with cell communicating capabilities. Also used as an emolient.

* Sodium Hyaluronate - keep skin cells "connected" to maintain external structure and texture. Also, with regular use, it helps to fight environmental stress/damage from sun and pollution. Eliminates dry skin with regular use.

* Yeast Extract - a good antioxidant.

* Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) - Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagen

* Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract - Potent antioxidant, improves blood flow, helps protect against inflammation and reddness from UVB/UVA light.

* Caffeine - Can have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. No research indicating when it is applied topically that it reduces puffiness.

* Phytosphingosine - A fatty alcohol that is a water binding, anti-inflammatory, and cell communicating ingredient. Also shown to help with damamged and diseased skin cells.

* Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 - A fantastic cell communicating synthetic peptide thought to diminish the effect of chemical messengers called "interleukins" in the skin that cause an inflammatory response. Also believed to thicken skin that has become thinner from age.

* Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 - A synthetic peptide that relaxes muscle contractions to reduce the appearance of fine lines. Claims to be similar to botox, this ingredient is questionable but still has some cell communicating properties so it is not a total bust.

* Palmitoyl Oligopeptide - A blend of fatty acids that also has cell communicating properties. It may stimulate collagen production and help the production of intercellular matrix substances (ex: hyaluronic acids).

* Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone - A citrus bioflavonoid. Used to banish dark circles, however this is questionable when applied topically.

*Note: I did not list all ingredients, and nor am I an expert. Please leave a comment below if you have anything to add - I love learning from others too:)

The Verdict:

Like all products, this one comes with big claims and I bought it for exactly that purpose. [I work night shifts, my underyes suffer, and I wanted something to fix or cover that up]. Ultimately, it ended up being used as an eye cream and nothing more. That being said, I don't think everyone should disregard this product as it is packed with awesome and beneficial ingredients!
